Brasserie Gavroche, Singapore ★★★★☆☆
The new kid on the block - headed by Frederic Colin, the former executive chief of St Regis, Singapore. Opened less than 3 months and located at 66 Tras Street, this place serves authentic French bistro food. I went there for dinner yesterday with an open mind as I read good reviews on this restaurant (but with no high hopes as I tried the food at St Regis, Singapore, before and I was not impressed at all than).
Front of the restaurant....
You will feel like you are transported to France once you step into the restaurant.
Charming Settings....
We set at the bar table as the restaurant was full yesterday. It was a last minute decision to dine there yesterday and we called only 1 hour before to book a table. I would recommend you to call earlier, at least 2 days in advance, if you would like to have a table inside the restaurant. In my opinion, the bar area was a good place to sit at yesterday as it was not crowded and noisy as compared to the restaurant inside.
Our drinks - Charles du Roy, Brut Rose nv
My eating companion for the night, Ben......
Little cheese puffs to start, they are very fragrant and cheesy.....yummy....
6 Huitres Tsarskaya de Bretagne - Half dozen of Tsarskaya oysters from Britany . Nothing really amazing if you have eaten Irish or Fin de Claire No.1 oysters. These Tsarskaya oysters are quite small, a little flashy with a sweet and seawater taste.
Grandpa Henri's Traditional Onion Soup - as the name suggest, it is a receipt from his grandpa. This onion soup is very light, reminds me of Chinese double boiled soup. Good and not overly cloying with cheese. Looking forward to my main courses.
Here comes my main course, Moules Frites, steamed mussels with white wine sauce and french fries. A classic Belgian dish, but it is my first time eating them! Wanted something light for the evening, but it turned out to be huge!
The mussels look never ending....
I counted the number of mussels in here after eating...guess how many were there??......32 !! Mmmm....are mussels high in cholesterol? I hope not....
Ben ordered one of their specialty, Grandpa Henri's fish quenelle with crayfish sauce. This is a fish moose dish. Very interesting and light tasting. Moose melt in your mouth and the crayfish sauce tasted very rich (like lobster bisque) and the ingredients are very fresh. I have never eaten a dish like this before. Portions are small for this dish, so I would not recommend this dish if you are a big eater. If you want something light, this is perfect.
I am looking like a red lobster after a glass of Rose....
To end, desert was Baba Au Rhum, sponge cake marinated in dark rum with whipped cream. Rum was a little diluted, maybe because they didn't want me to get drunk! But I prefer it thicker.... =)
The waiter trying to light up the liquor for the next desert ...guess what desert is coming up?.....
Crepes Suzette, Crepes with Grand Marnier. I prefer this desert more, the crepes are warm and sweet with oranges. A sweet and nice ending for the evening.....
My Verdict:
The ambiance is very charming and the food is decent, good and authentic. The service staffs are very friendly, but a little slow due to the packed restaurant. Be prepared to spend around $100+ per person depending on the food you ordered (our total bill was $204.80 for the evening). I would recommend the fish quenelle and the moules frites. I would come back here again and would recommend this place for romantic dinners, family and friends gathering. You must book early to avoid disappointment as this is the current new place to try! Bon Appetit !
